The ability of an algorithm to apply intelligence to a range of tasks is known as artificial general intelligence (AGI) or General AI. While there have been tremendous advancements in narrow AI, experts believe that general AI is still decades away.
As defined in the Whitehouse report, machine learning forms one of the most important applications of AI today. What it does is using statistical methods to find patterns, derive rules and predict future trends with a large data set. This “learning from data approach” distinguishes machine learning from its predecessor the “expert system” in which the algorithm imitates the human brain’s decision making process through rules defined in the code.
The merits of AI and its impact on jobs
Smart Cars: Self-driving vehicles will make roads significantly safer and could possibly increase the mobility of disabled and elderly people. In time self driving cars will change the paradigm of transportation, thereby changing the way the city functions.
Smart buildings: Buildings that leverage AI will save energy and improve efficiency of operating the building.
Healthcare analytics: Advances in the application of analytics in health care and precision medicine will extend life and improve the quality of life.
Education: AI enhanced education will allow teachers to reach students in disadvantaged communities across the world through teaching robots and sophisticated learning management systems such as MOOCs. Learning analytics will be valuable in designing and implanting programs for a diverse range of students in different learning
Transitioning into an AI enabled future
Redesign economic models
Apart from replacing human jobs, AI will drive down wages. With computers doing more of our work, the value of work done by humans and income based on that value would have to be re-defined. In other words, AI will redefine the value we get from work.
The government will have to design a safety net to provide people with financial security. A new method of re-distributing benefits of AI will have to be created to ensure social equality.
AI will transform education and the way it is delivered.
First of all, programs pro
What makes this Whitehouse report interesting is the emphasis on the importance of policy foresight in assimilating AI into our society. As individuals we will have to regularly update our technical skills, “re-learn” tasks, and be able to use AI creatively for jobs of the future. For a smooth tran
